FOOD IS SOCIAL

Updated: Feb 18, 2019

Food.  We need it to survive. Most of us enjoy it. Including me.  I really, really, really like food. All kinds of food. Mostly tacos and ice cream.

With all the GI issues I have had over the last six months, food has been hard for me. It has been such a social part of my life and something I have always enjoyed so you can imagine it is a little discouraging when you can’t enjoy the things you love. You miss out on opportunities all because food is involved.

But tonight….tonight i’m going to eat whatever the hell I want. And then i’m going to do it again tomorrow at Culver’s. (Culver’s the Garden Center; because they have the best Mother’s Day Celebration around!)

My in-laws are in town to enjoy some time at Culver’s with us tomorrow. Which means we FINALLY get to take them to one of our favorite places tonight, Bluff Lake. But, it’s not as easy as waiting your turn, chowing down and then driving home for me. No. See, the preparation that goes into enjoying a dinner out tonight started yesterday when I made sure to consume only liquids in an effort to not over irritate my GI system. I also increased my laxative and motility medication over the last couple days in order to make sure things started moving this morning because it had been 5 days since my last BM. Even though I use medication daily, it still doesn’t work for me most days. I have to find room somewhere to fit the tasty fish, coleslaw and taters. DUH!

I will consume a pre dose of Zofran to help offset any nausea that will come along with my meal, eat as slow as I can, suck on peppermints the whole way home for the cramping and hope I don’t have to pull out my Ziplock bag from my purse and vomit.

I mean, I’m pretty much a pro now so I am going to assume I will handle it like a champion.  And guess what…it will be worth it dammit!

(If you’re curious about my GI problems, look up Gastroparesis and intestinal dysmotility. I will explain this further another time, but in short, my EDS has caused paralysis of my stomach and intestines. It is hard for my GI to move food along and digest.)
