Being sick is terrible, they said.
It takes your power, they said.
You lose your independence, they said.
It makes you small, they said.
Yes, illness gets hard at times.
Sometimes you don't know where to turn.
What to do.
Sometimes you lose yourself.
But I have to tell you about all the great things it gives you.
Compassion to all people and situations surrounding you.
The ability to overcome. Every painful experience allows you the choice to come back different. A better version of yourself. Improved. Confident. Fearless. Sound. Our pain and defeat teaches us more about ourselves than successes ever will.
Strength. Mentally, physically and emotionally.
Gratitude. For every damn day you wake up. For your health. For your family. Your friends. The shower you took everyday in the the month of November. Pets. Good food surrounded by great company. Music. Sunsets. Sunrises. The ocean. Travel. The memories you once made with your grandma. Artistry. Kindness. All of it. There is so much good stuff.
Resourcefulness. Struggle and pain bring this out. It allows you to rise above. To turn your pain and insecurities into your platform.
Clarity. Illness tests your limits. Hard. If you keep pushing through, you will wake up one day and everything will fit. You will understand what is most important in your life and what isn't.
Someday you will wake up and understand why illness plagued you.
You will understand it brought joy along with the pain.
& the joy will matter more.
Bitterness fades.
You will no longer wish for parts of your life to be different.
You will be thankful for the one you have.
Every damn part of it.
You will be thankful for your legs. Because they get you from point A to B.
You will be thankful for what your eyes add to your life.
You will be thankful your arms can be wrapped around those you love.
You will be thankful for inner peace.
You will be thankful for your journey regardless of how hard it has been.
A favorite quote of mine:
And then it happens...
One day you wake up and you're in this place.
You're in this place where everything feels right.
Your heart is calm.
Your soul is lit.
Your thoughts are positive.
Your vision is clear.
You're at peace.
At peace with where you've been.
At peace with what you've been through.
At peace with where you're headed.
I can't explain how uplifting this "place" is and I hope you all have the courage to find it someday.
Once you understand how worthy you are of it and you get comfortable in your vulnerability you will find it.
Don't give up; there is no age limit.
